The team behind Islington desi pub The Tamil Prince have announced they will open a second restaurant.

The Tamil Prince, on Hemingford Road, was added to the Michelin guide in August, for skilfully combining all the comforts of a neighbourhood backstreet boozer, and a really good curry house.

Working with this wining recipe, the new venture by The Tamil Prince owners Glen Leeson and Prince Durairaj, The Tamil Crown will also be a Desi pub.

The restaurant pub takes over the Charles Lamb pub on Elia Street, close to City Road and Upper Street.

The Tamil Crown is due to open November 18 following extensive renovations that have transformed the building two floors into a dining area, a bar, a snug, a private dining room and an outdoor seating area.

While there is a strong emphasis on food, different to The Tamil Prince, this second venue will retain the feel and atmosphere of a traditional pub. Punters can come in for a pint and snack, or a full-fledged meal.

Vibrant, rich Indian and Tamil dishes, created by Prince Durairaj, will be on offer, from okra fries, onion bhaji and chicken lollipops among the bar snack options, and a selection of small and large plates as well.

Small plates will include uttapum, a savoury Indian pancake, and a lime leaf-roasted chicken with pineapple chutney and Bhel puri, inspired by the popular Indian street food puri dish.

Large plates are designed to be shared and they include coconut prawn moilee and a Karaikui crab masala.

For Sunday lunch, The Tamil Crown will put an Indian twang on British pub classics. This includes roasted lamb shank, masala roast chicken or beef, as well as a vegetarian option that is a twist on a banana leaf thali.

Even the trimmings get a doing over. Potato and green peas thokku, turmeric roast potatoes, coconut lentil cabbage, Yorkshire pudding and spiced fried cauliflower.

Indian beers will be on tap and award-winning Dalston cocktail bar Three Sheets, has created a menu of Indian-spiced cocktails too.

The Tamil Crown is due to open November 18, with soft launch details coming. Bookings are open via Resy.
